I first cut the ears out with a hand jigsaw |

The size you cut will be proportioned to the size of your gourd. I then sand the edges out smooth with sand paper. | 
I then glue the ears on using a strong super glue. | 
I seal around the attached area with Elmers wood filler to get a smooth look. *Hint* when using Elmers wood filler it can be very sticky, if you apply it then let it sit to dry a bit then wetten your fingers and smooth it out. |

Elmers wood filler is cheap and available, it fills in cracks and makes your bond stronger. It is also easy to sand smooth. | 
After it completely dries, I use a wet sanding sponge to smooth it out. |
