I never throw out gourd pieces, you never know what shape you will need.

sculptureholefortail.JPG (101755 bytes)

Measure your tail gourd piece and mark your gourd near to the bottom of your gourd so that the tail will lay nicely when your gourd is sitting flat. Pierce with a nail then insert hand jig saw and cut your hole.

sculpturetailinserted.JPG (84439 bytes)

Insert your tail. Gourd piece for tail can be either a curved dipper gourd piece or even a banana gourd.

sculpturegluenose.JPG (109254 bytes)

Glue your nose on with super glue or a hot glue gun

sculpturenose.JPG (121808 bytes)

Put it to the top portion of your birdhouse gourd.

sculpturedrawears.JPG (108724 bytes)

Draw your ears on a flatter piece of gourd

sculturecutears.JPG (96833 bytes)

Cut your ears out using a hand jigsaw

sculpturesandingears.JPG (112919 bytes)

Sand your ears smooth

sculptureglueear.JPG (94653 bytes)

Apply with super glue or a hot glue gun.

sculptureapplyear.JPG (103925 bytes)

Attach to the sides of your dogs head

sculpturegluedpieces.JPG (107417 bytes)

Now you are ready to fill in gaps with Elmers Carpenter's wood filler

sculpturewoodfill.JPG (96376 bytes)

Elmers Carpenter's wood filler is cheap, it is strong when dry and it sands smoothly with a sanding sponge.

sculptureapplyfill.JPG (108750 bytes)

Apply the wood filler around the nose

sculptureapplyfill2.JPG (95113 bytes)

Sculpturefilled3.JPG (101953 bytes)

Around the ears and the tail.
Then let it dry.

Sandingdog.JPG (130007 bytes)

After it has dried completely you may sand it with a wet sanding sponge. I fine that the medium last longer and works just fine.

sandingdog2.JPG (121122 bytes)

You will notice that the wetness allows the wood filler to fill in its own cracks that may have come about when it is drying.

sculptdogbasecoat.JPG (95958 bytes)

Now basecoat your dog and it is ready to give it its personality.
